AFTER 90: The sound of (almost) silence

Maybe all the cheering distracted them until now?

TORONTO FC 2 - COLUMBUS CREW 2

As part of the supporter's tapestry which makes up BMO Field's atmosphere, The Yorkies decided to give respect to all of the groups and individuals who tried valiantly (most of the time) to protest silently today against ML$E. This episode of "After 90" will reflect that protest and be silent as well. Mostly...

  1. Thanks for a post that captured the absurd that was on display today and this season. If this team has any heart left... Tuesday night will be an adventure.

  2. I understand why some people are upset with ownership and choosing to protest but booing the team at the final whistle I found very disappointing. Whether we like it or not we're a mid-table team right now and to draw 2-2 with one of the top teams in the league in a game we were far from awful didn't deserve the booing that came from the stands.

If people are going to sit in silence as a protest why come to the game at all? Wouldn't the protest have a bigger impact if there were sections of empty seats? A fair few people (perhaps renegades and certainly nobody on here going by the imagine on the top right) were protesting the increase in ticket prices with a $13 beer in hand.

  3. Fitting post guys. What a sad day. I was in 114 and surrounded by a handful of tourists, a handful of "green" protesters and an equal amount of "Keep Singing" fanclub types. It was weird and the worst part is for the first time in 4 years I just didn't feel like being there and thats sad.

@ Ricky - you make some good points but you know football is different. Once you love a club how do you walk away? Believe me - I'm from Luton... it would be easier for me to have supported any of the bigger clubs but I can't. That's the problem, MLSE has anyone who loves TFC in a vice grip. The only true way to protest is not go, you are right on, but how do you walk away if you hate the owners yet love the club? I'm so sad. We almost had it all in T.O.

  4. @Mad Hatter - If its the owners people hate and not the club why have a protest were people sit in silence and don't support the players during the 90 minutes of play then boo them afterwards? It's hard to walk away - I understand that fully, I grew up a season ticket holder for Northern Ireland games through the 90s and early 00s when they were at times awful - but if its an ownership issue it doesn't serve well to fill up the seats. An couple entirely empty supporters sections would have a harder hitting impact.

I personally am not as anti-ownership as some and not one for protesting. I understand why people are bitter about ticket prices going up without standards on the pitch doing the same, but one thing I'd like to ask MLSE - where is the extra revenue going from a ticket increase? Is it going to pay the bill on the new North Stand? To paying off Mo's contract? To paying the salary of a new and improved GM? To paying the contracts of better DP's? Or to make them a bigger profit? If its anything but the final question then I can understand the increase if the revenue is going back into the club. If its the last answer then give me a banner!

Here's the thing, people protested - or at least got upset about - the lack of real grass and we were given it. The lack of a DP and we got it. Mo gone - he got fired. A North Stand - it was built. Should MLSE listen and make ticket prices stagnant, what will come next? The Lid on the stands the image to the right calls for? (Actually, roofs on the stands would be nice!)

Don't take this as so pro-ownership as it looks, just putting a different slant on it.

  5. After the Columbus game .......
I will renew but with a form of reluctance and hesitation that seeded itself prior to the 2010 season and has never existed before.

The protests have had an effect. The feeble performance of the small (very small) group in 113 (usector?) was a punctuation mark to the protest unbeknown to those chanting.

The STH extension was a good move by MLSE, as I was not going to renew.

Good on all of us for the protest. Guarantee that if there is no SIGNIFICANT change.....I will be out, come 2011 renewals.
